As if it had a mind of its own, his hand moved to his belt to grab his knife. Something, or someone, was out there. Although he heard nothing, the prickling sensation on the back of his neck told him he had company. His gaze wandered upward to survey the few rooftops that still remained, but all he saw were the sharp silhouettes of fireplaces and bay windows.
Slowly he walked on, preparing himself for any eventuality. He didn’t want to give whoever was following him the impression he would be scared off so easily. By the time he came to a cast-iron gate in the wall separating the North Quarter from the rest of the city, the uneasy feeling of being followed had diminished.
Once again, he looked back, and. A movement from above caught his eye. As Nareth’s gaze homed in on the spot, the shadow on the rooftop rose, its dark cloak billowing silently in the light east wind. A hood covered the figure’s head—its shadow hiding their face—and a scarf concealed their mouth and nose.
The hunter and hunted stared challengingly at each other. It was almost as if the figure whispered to him, I’ll remember your face, stranger. Next time, you won’t get away unscathed.
Then the figure turned and disappeared into the shadows as if it had never existed.
