Vonda leaned her head against the cool stainless steel sink, fought the next wave of nausea still rolling in her stomach. Head still down, she reached over, turned on the water and rinsed out her mouth and then the sink. 

Relief he was gone should have calmed the uncontrollable panic darting through her, but it didn’t. Jaali was a powder keg ready to blow. This was absolutely the last time she’d marry a foreigner. She didn’t need the agony or the fear. Vonda filled a glass with tap water, stared out the kitchen window — the darkness racing across the swamp mirrored the gloom in her heart. Why she ever married that animal Jaali, she’d never understand. 

She took a swallow of water. Of course she understood why — it was for Rashid. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for him. Then, he had to go and ruin it all, con her into marrying Jaali. And, now he’d replaced her with that college girl. How could he do that to her? 

Vonda turned the half-full tumbler upside down in the sink. None of this mattered now. Life as she knew it was crumbling around her. The blood in her veins turned to ice.
