As he got closer to the shrub, in the direction of the voice, a Raggedy Ann doll ducked its head out of the bush and bounced about, trying to get his attention. It looked like an old-style doll and something his grandparents would have played with as children. It had curly red hair, blue trousers, and a big, greedy smile.
A puppet show, he thought.
Archie wanted to touch the doll. It was so lifelike that it had him mesmerized, like a spell had been cast on him. He walked another foot to get a better look, more curious.
“Psst, psst … Want to play with me?” asked the Raggedy Ann. It was alive! Its mouth moved in a synchronized motion, but there was no ventriloquist behind it.
When Archie was at arm’s length from the doll, something grabbed his ankles and started to drag him. It pierced into his skin like long nails, penetrating and scratching. He screamed and kicked as panic set in, fighting back with all his might.
“Cecilia! Cecelia! Help me! Help me!” Archie yelled toward the other children where his sister looked on in horror. His waved his hands while being dragged facedown, scraping the soil and trying to grab onto anything he could.
With one hand on each ankle, the evil beneath the shrub latched onto him with painted black fingernails on white hands that looked dead as they continued to clutch onto him and pull him.
Archie managed to grab ahold of a log with both arms curled around it, holding as tightly as he could, like his life depended on it, which it did.

Thank you Tremayne for taking this chance to do an interview with me! I such love your responses and I found that a good bit of people started writing once they became redundant – Even I did! But I haven’t published anything. Thank you again and hope everyone enjoys her answers below-
- What inspired you to start writing?
- I was made redundant from my job and had spare time on my side. I always wanted to write but never had the time. This was the break I needed to start exploring the craft and write my first book. I decided to focus on writing full time until I established my writing style, learn about book marketing and build an audience.
- What comes first, the plot or characters?
- I believe you need a strong plot and storyline first and then you need to develop the characters to take on the lead acting roles. I suppose it’s no different to a movie that starts with a great script and then the actors are hired to suit the producer’s vision.
- What is the best part of your day?
- Morning, when I am fresh, and everything is quiet so I can concentrate on my writing. I thrive in the peacefulness and my creative thoughts are at their best. Time permitting, I will go for a walk around a manmade lake nearby home to think about the plot, characters, and scene—that works like a charm all the time!
- Describe your writing space
- I need to be in the right environment to write. A busy café or an apartment facing the beach in a warm and sunny part of the country. The Australian Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast in Queensland is good for that and I have even tried Fiji.
- What book is currently on your bedside table?
- Stephen king’s latest book, The Stand.
- Do you have a library membership?
- No, everything I want is online.
- If you could invite one person to dinner, who would it be and what would you cook?
- Steve Jobs the founder of Apple. I know he’s a vegetarian so I would have to think up something green! Maybe sushi or something like that.
My Review:
This is the first I’m reading anything from Tremayne and frankly I loved everything about it. Now, Haunting in Old Tailem can easily be read as a standalone. I have not read the previous books obviously but I wonder if the character development was always this great from the beginning – Guess i’ll have to pick up previous books in the installment to find out!
We meet Clarrise whom is compassionate and for some reason finds herself helping spirits whom are stuck on our plane essentially helping them move on. Yet, this one in particular is gonna be a tough one for Clarrise as she visits an old town in Australia that has become known as a ghost town due to its dark history with paranormal activity, children disappearing, and ghost sightings at the cemetery. Although I was at a lost at times about the background for Carissa I was still able to thoroughly enjoy it without that knowledge. As our protagonist goes deeper into the spirit world inner workings she meets different characters who comes in handy in a magnitude of ways. This would bring to more books in the series I hope!
Clarrise Partner, Harry, although not mostly in this book but he might be in the upcoming novels, although not sure if he was in previous ones but from how it sounded I’m sure he was and will become a more physical character in the next series if my thoughts are right.
So this brings me to the scene and descriptions through out Haunting in Old Tailem which brings in history and old country towns that are in fact real ghost towns. I found this interesting because I’m always looking into ghost stories around me or where I live – Its weird living in one but this brings interesting understandings to books like this one. I most enjoyed how Tremayne uses this for her advantage by having Clarisse researching history of these places and visiting them which gives me excitement but also had me on the edge while reading.
This book could easily be made into a top horror movie – and I would so go watch it!
